Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (The Most Beautiful Villages of France) Association
When you think of France do you think of medieval villages perched on top of rocky peaks, cobblestone lanes, pastel shutters, steep narrow streets, small chapels, half timbered houses, pretty flower boxes and walled gardens? Well, you are not alone.
This is the image of France many of us have in our minds and what takes travellers back time and time again. There are just so many beautiful villages to explore and admire in France, it could literally take a lifetime. Thankfully you don't have to travel the breadth and depth of the country to find the most beautiful ones for yourself. This has already been done by the Association of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France and gorgeously presented in their guide - The Most Beautiful Villages of France.

Beynac-et-Cazenac - Two villages, one castle and a river
Dordogne Dept 24 | Population 569 | Altitude 130 m
Curled at the foot of an imposing castle that surveys the Dordogne is Beynac-et-Cazenac, a stunning village beside the Dordogne River. Occupied since the Bronze Age (c.2000 BCE) the naturally defensive site of Beynac became the seat of one of the four baronies of Périgord during the Middle Ages.
The impressive castle was besieged by Richard the Lionheart in 1197, demolished by Simon de Montfort, rebuilt, captured and recaptured during the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) by both the English and French kings. It was abandoned during the French Revolution and then in 1961 the owner began restoration work and opened it to the public.
What to do in Beynac-et-Cazenac
For many years the village of Beynac-et-Cazenac only made its living from passing trade along the Dorgogne River but now it's a popular place for tourists to stay in charming gîtes, canoe along the River, walk the local trails and go mountain biking.
Locronan - A historic and most beautiful village of France
Finistère 29 | Population 810 | Altitude 145 m
Locronan is dominated by its granite buildings and has a history that's filled with weaving and fabric creation. During the Renaissance the village became famous for its weaving industry providing sails for the East India Company and ships of the French navy. The offices of the East India Company are even still standing in the village square as well as the 17th century merchants' dwelling and residences of the king's notaries.
The village's beautiful granite buildings have been used as a backdrop in productions and movies and walking around the ancient church and houses you can almost imagine one of the dukes of Brittany waltzing around the corner.
Locronan has even been named 'the most beautiful town in France'. Now, that's rather a big claim, but after you've seen this town in summer with its blooming hydrangea bushes everywhere, I think you'll agree. It is breathtakingly adorable and I've written all about in a special edition blog post Locronan - The Most Beautiful Town in France.
