European Heritage Day - Journées du Patrimoine
Have you ever wanted to look behind the closed doors of French government and wander the corridors of normally closed châteaux?
Well you can, on each third weekend of September during the annual Journées du Patrimoine, or European Heritage Days. Over the weekend the public are welcome to explore some of France's most exclusive locations as part of the 'portes ouvertes' (open doors) event that takes place across Europe.

Buildings normally closed to the public, including churches, theatres and châteaux, as well as political institutions such as the Palais de l'Élysée and the Palais Bourbon (both in Paris), welcome those curious to learn more about the heritage of France. I can't wait for this day each year, because I'm one of those very curious people who love to get behind closed doors and check out what's normally off-limits.
Many locations are open for free and this makes for an even better day out. What an interesting way to gain an insider's view of l'Hexagone's emblematic buildings. Private châteaux across the country are often also opened by their owners with music, entertainment and tours on offer.
You can find out the exact dates in September each year and what buildings are open on the event's official website. To find out what private properties are open, search directly on their website or social channels.
