Tapenade Recipe

Sitting at a cafe in Uzès, with a local cat for company, eating tapenade smeared on a fresh baguette with a cool glass of wine, is one of the sweetest memories I have of my time in the picturesque Provincial town of Uzès.

After spending the morning wandering around market stalls taste testing local cheese, smoked sausage and buying bed linens for our home, I found a seat in the sun and ordered a snack of tapenade. I love olives, black more than green, and add them to my portion of salads and pasta dishes. Not everyone loves olives in my home, especially my husband, who gets physically unwell after eating them. So tapenade is one of my indulgent snacks when holidaying or travelling on my own - especially when in France!

Gratin Dauphinois Recipe

Just the other day I cooked gratin dauphinois as part of our New Year's Eve dinner as we celebrated with family and a bunch of friends. We welcomed in the new year with amongst other things, French martinis, baked Camembert infused with rosemary, slow roast pork with vegetables and gratin dauphinois and a 'to-die-for' tarte au citron. Food links people and events together and this New Year's Eve was no exception for me.

Realising that many of the dishes I cooked have recipes on the blog available for you, but that I'd not shared a recipe on how to cook gratin dauphinois already, I thought it high-time that this easy classic French dish got its own post. Also, for all of you who messaged and emailed me asking for the recipe after our Facebook and Instagram New Year's Eve posts, here it is...

Brioche Recipe

Brioche is a staple pastry in France. Eaten at breakfast, midday and for a snack at any time of the day, it's pretty much eaten by someone somewhere all day in France! Half cake, half bread, brioche is loved the country over for its buttery softness. Sold in boulangeries, supermarchés and markets, it's certainly not difficult to find in France.

You'll find brioche buns, normal and mini sized; loaves, in different shapes and sizes; and fancy plaited styles in most bakeries.

A whole month celebrating cakes, cookies, pies, tartes, flans and ice-cream sounds amazing doesn't it. Well, that's what we can all do for the whole month of October because October is National Dessert Month.

Of course, celebrating National Dessert Month is rather easy when you live in France because small towns and sometimes even little villages, will have their own boulangerie with tempting desserts to choose from, and when we talk about France's large cities, well the choice of pâtisseries is almost endless!

Strawberry Ice Cream Recipe (Glace à la Fraise)

Summer in France is a magical time for eating outdoors, lazing under shady trees and taking slow evening walks watching the sun eventually set. I love nothing more than indulging in homemade strawberry ice cream while watching butterflies and insects buzz around my neighbours potager (vegetable garden) as we sit outside and gaze over our little backyard fence.

French Quiche Lorraine Recipe

Made from only a few ingredients, the traditional French tart Quiche Lorraine is now a worldwide favourite. Eaten hot, warm or cold and served for breakfast, lunch or dinner it's a versatile dish. A quiche is defined as a French tart consisting of pastry crust filled with savoury custard and pieces of cheese, meat, seafood or vegetables. As you may have already guessed, the most well-known type of quiche is the Lorraine, which includes lardons or bacon. This delicious dish originates from the French region of Lorraine - hardly surprising given its name!
