Where Are You Going in the New Year?
Happy New Year to you!! Where are you going in the new year? As lots of us reflect on the past year, many of us will also think and make our plans for this new year. Part of my new year planning is listing the places I hope to visit in the New Year. Some will be favourite countries or cities, others will be never before visited places and, of course, there are always new regions of France we try to explore each trip to France.
Will You Visit Bayeux, France This Year? One of our favourite French cities to visit is Bayeux. This town really has something for everyone. Bayeux was the first town to be liberated by the Allies in 1944 and luckily escaped war damage. Because of this the streets are full of charm and a walk around the town is easy and there is so much to see. We enjoyed walking the city streets after a long autumn lunch, but an evening stroll after dinner in summer would also be perfect.
Cathédrale de Notre-Dame, Bayeux
Above the town rises the spires and domed lantern tower of the Gothic Cathédrale de Notre-Dame. Beneath the Cathédrale’s interior is an 11th century crypt decorated with restored 15th century frescoes of angels playing musical instruments. The Cathédrale is a national monument of France holding this same status with other famous French monuments like Mont St- Michel and Chatres.
Bayeux Tapestry, Bayeux
The famous Bayeux Tapestry was originally housed within the Cathédrale (Cathedral) and is now on display in its own nearby museum. This is an amazing piece of history, and as an embroider myself, I stood in awe of the ancient embroiders’ handiwork.
Photos are not allowed inside the museum due to the fragile nature of the backing fabric and embroidery threads but the gift store has cards, guides and books that have many photos and explain the history. Similarly the Apocalypse Tapestry at Château d’Angers is not to be photographed due to its fragile nature and historical significance.
Battle of Normandy Museum, Bayeux
The Battle of Normandy Museum had my boys and husband enthralled with its transportation vehicles, clothing and armament. And as my daughter enjoyed the Art Museum and quirky cafes there were smiles all round! So all in all, Bayeux has something for everyone. A city for the travelling family.
Travel information for the three major museums Museum Bayeux Tapestry (UNESCO), Memorial Museum of the Battle of Normandy and MAHB (Museum of Art and History Baron Gerard) is on the Bayeux Museums Website.
